A tall woody climber (sometimes creeping) up to 4 m. or more in length; younger stems densely ferrugineous-pubescent when young, becoming glabrous when older. Leaves petiolate; lamina 6-13 x 2-6.5 cm., ovate, broadly lanceolate, lanceolate-oblong or oblong, apex acute or apiculate, or sometimes subobtuse, base cordate, rounded or cuneate, densely ferrugineous-pubescent on both surfaces when young, later usually glabrous, dark green above, grey-green beneath, secondary and tertiary nerves +/- strongly developed; petiole 0.5-2 cm. long, canaliculate, usually glabrous; stipules 2-15 x 1-8 mm., broadly lanceolate, obovate or oblong, +/- elliptic, deciduous or +/- persistent, usually glabrous. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, forming many-flowered corymbose panicles; bracts 0.5-2.5 mm. long, deciduous; bracteoles +/- 1 mm. long, +/- persistent. Flowers 1.5-2.5 cm. in diam., zygomorphic. Sepals 2-3 x 1-1.5 mm., oblong-elliptic, sericeous outside, glabrescent. Petals 6-9 x 4-5 mm., white to cream or yellow-orange (red?), distinctly unguiculate, deeply fimbriate at the margins. Stamens with anthers 1-1.5 mm. long, ovate-oblong; filaments 4-7 mm. long, minutely pubescent. Ovary densely sericeous; styles 4-8 mm. long, glabrous. Samara with lateral wing 4-5 cm. in diam., circular or broadly ovate, glabrous, somewhat undulate, dorsal wing 1.5-3 x 0.4-0.6 cm., crest-like.

Erect or suberect shrub or shrublet, or woody herb, sometimes trailing and tending to twine at the branchlet tips; younger stems greyish- or yellowish-sericeous-tomentose, older ones +/- densely pubescent or sometimes glabrescent. Leaves usually in whorls of three or opposite, rarely subopposite, petiolate; lamina 3.5-6 x 1.5-2.5 cm., lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, apex obtuse to sub-obtuse, apiculate, base always rounded, with 2 glands on the margin beneath near the insertion of the petiole (or often near the apex of the petiole), usually greyish-or yellowish-sericeous-tomentose on both surfaces (denser underneath), sometimes glabrescent above; petiole 2-5 mm. long, stout, usually tomentose; stipules 3-10 mm. long, ovate, oblong or rarely ovate-lanceolate, apex obtuse, retuse or +/- apiculate, sericeous-tomentose, often absent. Flowers 1.5-2 cm. in diam., in few-flowered axillary or terminal umbels. Sepals about 5 mm. long, oblong, sericeous outside, sometimes glabrescent. Petals 8-10 mm. long, obovate to obovate-oblong, bright yellow. Stamens with anthers 1-1.5 mm. long, glabrous; filaments c. 4 mm. long, slender. Ovary densely sericeous; styles about 6 mm. long. Samara with wing 1.75-2 x 0.9-1.5 cm., obliquely ovate or obovate-oblong, very often reddish, sericeous to nearly glabrous.
