Leaves opposite and scale-like towards base of stem or branch, otherwise linear to ovate and in whorls of 3

Monotypic: Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle, Old World, naturalised in America and a serious pest in U.S.A.; sthn trop Afr.: Zambia, Mozambique, probably introduced.
