Description: 
Pedicelled spikelet narrower than sessile spikelet, awnless, male or sterile, or reduced to a glume, awnless. x= 5 (aneuploids, high polyploidy).
Distribution: 
Species +/- 24, tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World; 3 in sthn Afr., widespread. Mostly introduced and extensively cultivated either for grain or fodder. Sorghum versicolor Andersson found in N Namibia, Botswana, the northern provinces of South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal, has apparently not played a role in the evolution of the cultivated sorghums.
