Description: 
Monoecious or subdioecious shrubs or small trees with a simple indumentum. Leaves alternate, shortly petiolate or subsessile, stipulate, simple, dentate to subentire, eglandular, penninerved. Inflorescence s unisexual or bisexual, racemose, rarely subpaniculate, axillary, usually solitary per axil. Male flowers : calyx closed in bud, later splitting into (2)3 or 4(5) valvate lobes which become reflexed; petals absent; disc glands free, interstaminal; stamens 15-120, filaments free, anthers basifixed, introrse, longitudinally dehiscent, connective broad; pistillode absent. Female flowers : sepals 5 or 6(9), +/- biseriate, imbricate; petals absent; disc annular; ovary 3-celled, with 1 ovule per cell; styles 3, connate at base, undivided, rather stout. Fruit s 3-lobed, septicidally dehiscent into 3 bivalved cocci; endocarp thinly woody. Seed s globose, ecarunculate; endosperm fleshy; cotyledons broad, flat.

Species +/- 10, trop. Africa and Madagascar; sthn trop. Afr. 1: Argomuellera macrophylla Pax, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique.
